Thecaloriesemittedbypassengers,around100wattsperperson,combinedwiththeheatfromtrainsmovingalongtracksandtheundergroundlocationofthemetromeanthatcorridortemperaturesare14~20degreesCelsiusallyeararound.
Theproject,whichisbasedongeothermaltechnology,aimstodrawheatfromsubterraneanpassagesandmoveittoheatexchangersbeforesupplyingheatingpipes.Thesystemwillcomplementdistrictheating.
Theprojectshouldslashcarbondioxideemissionsbyathirdcomparedtousingaboilerroomconnectedtodistrictheating,Wachnicksaid.
Atenderfortheexperimentalproject,whichisexpectedtoheat17flats,willbelaunchedbeforetheendoftheyear,andworkisexpectedtostartin2011.
Butthesystem,whichWachnicksaidisalsobeingcarriedoutinAustria,willnotbegeneralizedinParisbecauseofcostsandtheneedtobuildpassagestoconveytheheatfromthemetrotobuildings.
“Wewereluckytofindapassagewaythatallowsustocollecttheheatdirectlyfromthemetro,withouthavingtopaytobuildone,otherwiseitwouldhavebeenimpossible,”headded.
