An optical-sensing modality that exploits Dyakonov–Tamm waves

摘要 Surface-wave-basedopticalsensingofananalyteinafluidreliesonthesensitivityofthesurfacewavetotheelectromagneticpropertiesoftheanalyte-containingfluidinthevicinityoftheguidinginterface.Surfaceplasmon-polariton(SPP)wavesaremostcommonlyusedforopticalsensingbecauseoftheeaseoftheexcitationofanSPPwavewhenthefluidispartneredwithametal.Ifthefluidisreplacedbyaporous,anisotropic,andperiodicallynonhomogeneoussolidfilledwiththefluid,whilethemetalisreplacedbyanisotropichomogeneousdielectricmaterial,thesurfacewaveiscalledaDyakonov–Tamm(DT)wave.WehavetheoreticallydeterminedthattheincorporationoftheDT-waveguidinginterfaceinaprism-coupledconfigurationprovidesanalternativetotheanalogousSPPwave-basedsensor,withcomparabledynamicsensitivity.
