  • 简介:AbstractImportance:Vitamin A (or retinol) has considerable antioxidative and anti-inflammatory attributes and it may have protective effects on the respiratory health of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This issue, however, remains controversial.Objective:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between serum retinol levels (SRL) and force expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in patients with CF.Methods:All patients with pancreatic insufficiency attending the CF Department of "Agia Sofia" Children’s Hospital in Athens, Greece, aged 6 to 19 years during the 2012-2016 period, who could perform spirometry effectively, were included in the study. The impact of SRL on FEV1 was examined longitudinally and analyzed with generalized estimating equations.Results:The study included 231 patients and 851 SRL measurements were performed. In 25 (3.2%) cases the SRL were below the 5th percentile of reference distribution; none was above the 95th percentile. The analysis showed that SRL was positively correlated with the FEV1 (P < 0.001).Interpretation:In this sample of children and adolescents with CF, vitamin A deficiency was rare. Our results suggest a positive relationship between SRL and FEV1.

  • 简介:AbstractBreast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent malignancy worldwide, and a continued upward trend has been predicted in the coming decades. Screening in selected targeted populations, which is effective in reducing cancer-related mortality, has been widely implemented in many countries. This review summarizes the advances in BC screening techniques, organized or opportunistic BC screening programs across different countries, and screening modalities recommended by different academic authorities. Mammography is the most widely used and effective technique for BC screening. Other complementary techniques include ultrasound, clinical breast examination, and magnetic resonance imaging. Novel screening tests, including digital breast tomosynthesis and liquid biopsies, are still under development. Globally, the implementation status of BC screening programs is uneven, which is reflected by differences in screening modes, techniques, and population coverage. The recommended optimal screening strategies varied according to the authoritative guidelines. The effectiveness of current screening programs is influenced by several factors, including low detection rate, high false-positive rate, and unsatisfactory coverage and uptake rates. Exploration of accurate BC risk prediction models and the development of risk-stratified screening strategies are highly warranted in future research.

  • 简介:AbstractPreimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is an early form of prenatal genetic diagnosis, which can identify the abnormal embryos cultured in vitro, allow only transfer of genetically normal embryos, and improve the pregnancy rate. In recent years, the rapid development of microarrays and next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has remarkably accelerated the clinical application of PGT. In particular, a variety of detection methods have emerged and achieved significant progress in PGT for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR). The detection-related abilities of these methods range from the detection of limited chromosome aneuploidy to comprehensive chromosome screening of the whole genome to differentiation of embryos with normal or balanced translocation/inversion karyotypes. In this study, we reviewed PGT-SR-related detection techniques to provide a better reference for clinical application and research. We have also discussed the potential development of novel techniques in the future.

  • 简介:Phosphorus(P)isalimitedresourcethatcouldbedepleted.Consequently,recyclingthePcontainedinsewagesludge,includingsewagesludgeincinerationash(SIA),fromwastewatertreatmentplantsisapossibilitytobeexplored.Agreenhouseexperimentusingannualryegrass(LoliummultiflorumL.)wasperformedwithanexperimentaldesignofthreecompletelyrandomizedblocksoftwosoilsand29treatments:onecontrolwithoutPandtwolevelsof9and26kgtotalPha-1from14differentsources:twelveSIAs(notcontaminatedbytracemetals)fromtheUSandCanada,onecommercialsyntheticfertilizer(triplesuperphosphate(TSP)),andonecommercialrockphosphate(RP).Higherryegrassbiomasslevelswereachievedatthehigherfertilizationrate(26kgtotalPha-1)andwhenusingtheSIAswiththehighestPsolubilitypercentage(PSP)(≥54%oftotalP).ThebiomassincreasesfollowingSIAapplicationwereashighas29%and59%morethanthecontrolforthesandyloamandclayeysoil,respectively,but40%lessthaninTSPforbothsoils.AsimilarbehaviorwasobservedforPuptake,withamaximumincreaseof26%fortheclayeysoil,and165%forthesandyloamsoil.TheryegrassbiomassandPuptakeincreasesduetoSIAapplicationwerelargerthanthoseduetoRPapplicationintheclayeysoil,butsimilartothoseinthesandyloamsoil.TheSIAswithaPSPof≥54%significantlyincreasedsoilavailablePstocksandsaturation.Accordingtoourfindings,weconcludethattheSIAsfrommunicipalandagrifoodindustrieshaveapotentialforPagriculturalrecycling,buttheirefficienciesvary.

  • 简介:MaterialFlowAnalysis(MFA)isacrucialinstrumentforsustainabledevelopmentandcreatingindustrialecologysystem.MFAstudiescouldbalanceandanalyzethesources,flows,andconsumesofspecificmaterialsorsubstances.TheresultsofMFAstudiescouldsupportthestrategiesordecisionsmakingforenergy,resource,andwastemanagement,especiallyachievingsustainableresourcemanagement.AtCSC,thedynamicsimulatingsoftware,STELLA,isusedtodevelopaMFAmodelforscenarioanalysis.CSCalsousesthefreewareSTAN2.0asatoolforvisualizingandsimulatingmaterialflowsandstocks.CasestudiesofgreenhousegasesMFAforintegratedsteelworksareconducted.Theresultsshowedthatthecarboncontentofhot-metalisanimportanthiddenflowforbalanceanalysis,andthedifferentGHGemissionscenariosandmitigationactionscenariosareassessed.Inaddition,theIron-makingGHGI/OMFAModel,basedonworldsteelGlobalSteelSectorApproach(GSSA),isdevelopedforcalculatingtheCO2andenergyintensityofcokemaking,sintering,andBFprocesses.ThisMFAmodelwasusedtoanalyzetheCO2reductionpotentialforiron-makingprocess.ThecasesconductedforMFAapplicationsatCSCweresuchasgreenhousegas,zinc,etc.Inthefuture,CSCisgoingtodevelopa'CSCEnvironmentManagementandDecisionSupportingSystem'whichcombineMFA,LCA(lifecycleassessment),andenvironmentriskassessment.Thissupportingsystemexpectstopromotingenergyefficiencyandbestresourceuse,supportingenvironmentpolicymaking,creatingenvironmentalinformationvalue,etc.
