FACTORS AFFECTING THE HEALTH-RELATED OUALITY OF LIFE IN LUNG CANCER PATIENTS: MEASURED BY EORTC QLQ-C30 QLQ-LC13

Objective:Theaimsofthiscross-sectionaldescriptivestudyweretoevaluatethequalityoflife(QoL)ofthelungcancerpatientsandtoinvestigatedifferencesinQoLwithrespecttogeneralandmedicalcharacteristics.Methods:Structuredquestionnaires(EORTCQLQ-C30andQLQ-LC13)wereusedamong106consecutivelungcancerpatientsfordatacollectionduring1Jan2002to31Dec2002.Thet-testandone-wayanalysisofvariance(ANOVA)wereusedtocomparedifferencesofQoLbetweenthefactorsata5%levelofsignificance.Results:Thestudyrevealedthatthequalityoflifeofthelungcancerpatientswereworsethanreferencevalue.Theyoung,maleandmarriedpatientgroupshadbetterQoL.PatientswithlowereducationorincomehadworseQoL.SmallcelllungcancerpatientsreportedpoorerQoLthannon-smallcelllungcancerpatients.ThequalityoflifeinpatientsatlatestageorwithmetastasishadworseQoL.Thetreatmentscouldworsenthequalityoflife.Whentheoutcomesofthefourtreatmentswerecompared,thesurgerygroupdisplayedthebestqualityoflifeandthecombinedtreatmentgroupdisplayedtheworstqualityoflife.Conclusion:Theresultsofthepresentstudyshowedimportantramificationsforclinicians,researchersandpolicy-makers.
