  • 简介:Inthepresentpaper,thelateraldynamicflightstabilitypropertiesoftwohoveringmodelinsectsarepredictedbyanapproximatetheorybasedontheaveragedmodel,andcomputedbynumericalsimulationthatsolvesthecompleteequationsofmotioncoupledwiththeNavier-Stokesequations.Comparisonbetweenthetheoreticalandsimulationalresultsprovidesatesttothevalidityoftheassumptionsmadeinthetheory.Oneoftheinsectsisamodeldroneflywhichhasrelativelyhighwingbeatfrequency(164Hz)andtheotherisamodelhawkmothwhichhasrelativelylowwingbeatfrequency(26Hz).Thefollowingconclusionhasbeendrawn.Thetheorybasedontheaveragedmodelworkswellforthelateralmotionofthedronefly.Forthehawkmoth,relativelylargequantitativedifferencesexistbetweentheoryandsimulation.Thisisbecausethelateralnon-dimensionaleigenvaluesofthehawkmotharenotverysmallcomparedwiththenon-dimensionalflappingfrequency(thelargestlateralnon-dimensionaleigenvalueisonlyabout10%smallerthanthenon-dimensionalflappingfrequency).Nevertheless,thetheorycanstillcorrectlypredictvariationaltrendsofthedynamicpropertiesofthehawkmoth'slateralmotion.
