W-25Cualloysweremicrowavesinteredina2.45GHzmultimodeapplicator.Thedensification,microstructureandtheirdependenceonsinteringmodeandFeadditionwereinvestigatedindetail.Owingtothevolumetricheatingintrinsicinmicrowaveprocessing,amicrostructurewithlargerWgrainsizeincenterregionswasobservedasagainstlargergrainsizeinedgeregionsforconventionalsintering.Microwavesinteringdemonstratesitsintrinsicadvantagessuchasrapidheatingrate,densificationenhancementandmicrostructuralhomogeneity;butitundesirablypromotesWgraingrowth.Undermicrowavesintering,theroleofFeadditiononcompactconsolidationisnotsosubstantialasunderconventionalsintering.MoreoverFedegradesthemicrostructuralquality,generatingworseuniformityandcoarserWgrains.
