Drag Reduction in a Swimming Humboldt Penguin, Spheniscus Humboldti, when the Boundary Layer is Turbulent

摘要 Anareaofprotrudingfeathersfoundaroundthebeakofmanypenguinspeciesisthoughttoinduceaturbulentboundarylayerwhilstswimming.HydrodynamictestsonamodelHumboldtpenguin,Spheniscushumboldti,suggestthatinducedturbulencecausesasignificantreductioninboundarylayerheight,flowseparation,andanaverageof31%reductionindrag(1.0m/sto4.5m/s).Visualisationofsurfaceflowshowedittofollowthebodyprofile,overthefeetandtail,beforeseparating.Movementofthefeetinswimmingpenguinscorrelateswithsteeringofthebird.Inducedturbulencemaythereforefurtherincreaseswimmingefficiencybyreducingtheamountoffootmovementrequiredtodirecttheswimmingbird.
