Hydrodynamic binary coalescence of droplets under air flow in a hydrophobic microchannel

摘要 Basedonthevolumeoffluid(VOF)method,weconductanumericalsimulationtostudythehydrodynamicbinarycoalescenceofdropletsunderairflowinahydrophobicrectangularmicrochannel.Twodistinctregimes,coalescencefollowedbyslidingmotionandthatfollowedbydetachingmotion,areidentifiedanddiscussed.Additionally,thedetailedhydrodynamicinformationbehindthebinarycoalescenceisprovided,basedonwhichadynamicmechanicalanalysisisconductedtorevealthehydrodynamicmechanismsunderlyingthesetworegimes.Thesimulationresultsindicatethattheslidingmotionofdropletsisdrivenbythedragforceandrestrainedbytheadhesionforceinducedbytheinterfacialtensionalongthemainflowdirection.Thedetachment(i.e.,upwardmotion)ofthedropletisdrivenbytheliftforceassociatedwithanaerodynamicliftingpressuredifferenceimposedonthecoalescentdroplet,andalsorestrainedbytheadhesionforceperpendiculartothemainflowdirection.Especially,theliftforceismainlyinducedbyanaerodynamicliftingpressuredifferenceimposedonthecoalescentdroplet.TwotypicalregimescanbequantitativelyrecognizedbyaregimediagramdependingonReandWe.ThehigherReandWerespectivelyleadtorelativelylargerliftforcesandsmalleradhesionforcesactingonthedroplet,bothofwhicharehelpfultodetachmentofthecoalesceddroplet.
